Paul Baumer is just a German patriot, excited to fight. Indoctrinated in school with propaganda, he and his friends sign up for the army after graduation. But as soon as war's horrors become too much to bear, as soon as his buddies die or become wounded, Paul questions the sanity of fighting within a few hundreds yards of countryside.
