Sir Robert Chiltern is a successful Government minister, well-off with a wife. This is threatened with damning evidence of a past misdeed if Mrs Cheveley looks. Sir Robert turns for help to his friend Lord Goring, the grief of his daddy and an apparently idle philanderer. Goring knows the woman of old, and, because of him, takes the whole thing pretty badly.
