Bernice "Bernie" Rhodenbarr is a professional burglar who also owns a bookstore. Carl Hefler, one of her friends, works as a dog groomer. Following a successful burglary, it is discovered that a dead body was discovered in the house she burgled. She must use her criminal skills to clear her name of the murder AND avoid being charged with the burglary because she is the only one who can be placed at the scene of the crime.
