Set in mid-1950s Australia, when communism was feared and rabbits overran the farmlands, the film chronicles a long, hot summer through the eyes and imagination of 9-year-old Celia. Celia's Grandmother's death leaves her adrift between childhood games and customs and the adult world. Nightmare monsters merge by day with the banal violence of adulthood, leading to catastrophic and surprising outcomes.
