The aim of anesthetic gases was to make surgery painless in the 1840s. While doing so, his patient awakens beneath the knife, forcing him to abandon his position in disgrace. He becomes addicted to the gases and joins a gang lead by Black Ben and his henchman Resurrection Joe.
