Burt Lancaster plays with Steve Thompson, a man who seals his dark fate if he returns to Los Angeles to get his exwife Anna Dundee (Yvonne DeCarlo) eager to reestablish their love against all better judgement. She supports their affair but quickly marries mobster Slim Dundee (Dan Duryea). Steve Thompson directs Dundee to divert suspicion of the event.
