Rachel's life is upended when she learns of her grandmother's dying; she is a Los Angeles-based writing student. At the suggestion of a respected professor, she returns home to address the trauma in her family via writing. Her homecoming is accompanied by both therapeutic and painful disclosures, including a romantic rekindling with an old love interest and, most significantly, the difficulty of assisting her brother as he fights with mental health and addiction challenges.
