Gavin Grey, a Louisiana football player, possessed everything. He was an All-American who married his high school love, Babs Rogers, and was a hometown hero. Gavin recognizes, however, after a failed professional career that fame and success have passed him by and that he is no longer the hero everyone keeps reminding him he should still be. Gavin's dissatisfaction with his existence causes difficulties in his marriage, and he begins to question who he is now that he is no longer a hero.
