As a devastated single parent in Chicago, John Travolta is responsible for raising his daughter under trying circumstances. The young girl comes upon and later brings back to health a wounded Doberman who had previously been used in combat. After being duped by mafia figures for whom he was acting as a courier, the father and daughter abandon the dog and flee across the country to Los Angeles, with both the dog and the mobsters chasing after them.
