This extremely personal picture was written by Ingmar Bergman and is about an affair that destroys the marriage of an actress (Marianne) and a musician (Markus). Marianne moved in with her lover in order to continue the affair. However, she is disturbed by Markus' refusal to grant her custody of their child. Finally, Markus declares that he may have a solution to the impasse, but this leads to deceit, falsehoods, and tragedy.
