As kids from the Ekdahl family that is loving, Alexander and Fanny enjoy a contented life with their parents, who conduct a theatre company. But the siblings wind up at a joyless home if their mother chased a stern bishop, after their father dies abruptly. The situation grows worse as the bishop gets to be controlling, but dedicated family members make a valiant attempt to aid Alexander, Fanny and Emilie.
