After her husband's death, a mother carries off her children to live at an enormous, decrepit old mansion with their grandparents. However, the children are hidden in an area just below the loft, visited only by their mother who becomes less and less concerned with their failing health, and also more concerned with herself and the inheritance she intends to win from her dying dad.
