Thane Furrows, a very cynical but unintentionally funny children's book writer, wakes up one morning and starts complaining to himself about everything and everyone because he doesn't like it. This is because Thane gets weird phone calls, letters, and voices in his head, all of which say that something will happen at 8 o'clock. As the day goes on, Thane rants and raves about the things that bother him. As the clock ticks closer and closer to his fate, he gets more and more angry.
