A saga of class connections and changing times within an Edwardian England to the brink of modernity, the film centres around liberal Margaret Schlegel, who, together with her sister Helen, becomes involved in just two spouses: wealthy, conservative industrialist Henry Wilcox and his wife Ruth, and the downwardly mobile working-class Leonard Bast along with his mistress Jackie.
