In1890, a destitute writer named Pontus walks the streets of Christiania looking for love and an opportunity to publish his writings. His sense of reality is fading, and all he encounters is defeat and agony. He is ecstatic one minute and then curses everyone the next. He maintains human dignity and pride throughout the process.
