Based on the Depression-era bildungsroman memoir of writer A. E. Hotchner, the movie follows the story of a boy struggling to live on their own in a hotel in St. Louis after his mum is focused on a sanatorium with tuberculosis. From which the boy can not make sure he'll return, his father, a German immigrant and salesman employed by the Hamilton Watch Company, is away on extended excursions.
