During a pub fight, Bill Saunders, a former prisoner of war living in England, whose wartime experiences have left him unstable and violent, injures and kills another man before fleeing. He conceals himself with the assistance of a nurse, Jane Wharton, who believes his narrative that the killing was an accident.
