After his release from a Vietnamese war jail, the French lieutenant colonel Pierre Raspeguy is dispatched to Algeria to assist in suppressing the resistance. Raspeguy strives to transform a ragtag group of men into a strong military squad with the prospect of marrying a lovely countess if he is promoted to general.
