Joel Dawson, along with the rest of humanity, has been living underground for seven years since enormous beasts took over the world. Joel re-falls for his high school girlfriend Aimee, who lives 80 miles away in a coastal colony, after reconnecting over radio. Joel, realizing that there is nothing left for him underneath, resolves to go out to Aimee, despite the dangers that await him.
