A man named Milan, played by Johnny Hallyday, steps off a train in a small French village. As he waits for the day he will rob the town bank, he meets M. Manesquier, a retired poetry teacher (Jean Rochefort). The two men form an odd friendship and travel down the road not taken. Each of them wants to live the life of the other.
