A working-class family in London's East End struggles through the crisis under Margaret Thatcher. There is just one employee in the family: Mavis. The couple's two sons are also employed: Colin, a timid and shy young man, and Mark. The appearance of Mavis' sister Barbara and her husband John, whose financial and social affluence appears to be a cozy veneer over an unsatisfactory marriage, is striking.
