An old woman finds a baby in her cabbage patch. She brings the child up and, when she dies, the boy enters an orphanage. To to leaves looks for workin postwar Milan, and the orphanage a man. He ends up with the homeless and organizes them to establish a town in a lot. The squatters find oil in the land and to to sees a fantasy of the old woman who gives him a stunt which will give him whatever he wants.
