During World War I, controlling officer General Broulard requests his subordinate to strike a trench position, offering a promotion. Mireau commands his own weak, Colonel Dax, to plan the strike, though the mission is foolhardy into the point of suicide. General Mireau demands the court-martial of three soldiers that are arbitrary in order to save face when it ends in tragedy.
