The conclusion of the 19th century. A boat filled with Swedish emigrants involves the island of Bornholm. Among these are Lasse and his son Pelle who move to Denmark to get work. They find employment in a big farm, but are treated as the lowest type of life. Pelle starts to speak Danish but remains harassed as a foreigner. However, none of them really wants to give up their dream of finding a better life than the life they left in Sweden.
