A smart scientist Sarah, a doctoral student at Columbia University, is about to move to Ohio with her boyfriend, who is already married. A few weeks before she leaves, Sarah's mother dies suddenly, leaving Sarah the owner of a small but well-liked Christian bookstore in the Bronx. Sarah has to plan a funeral for the family matriarch that is respectful of her culture while also meeting the needs of her loving but demanding family. She also has to deal with the return of her estranged father and figure out what to do with the bookstore. Sarah faces her new responsibilities while trying to figure out how to stay true to herself. She gets help from her Eastern European neighbors, her sassy African aunts, and a no-nonsense ex-con co-worker.
