Extending across the canvas of the Sino-Japanese War of the 30s, the succeeding Japanese abandonment in 1945, and also the attack of Communism, this film illustrates an ill-fated romance between a gifted lady novelist and a Chinese traitor working with the Japanese who fall victim to the chaos of battle and their awful failure to resolve political distinctions.
