In Roman Polanski's first English-language picture, beautiful young manicurist Carole suffers from androphobia (the pathological fear of interaction with men). When Helen, roommate and her sister, leaves their London apartment to go on a holiday with her boyfriend, Carole withdraws to her apartment. She begins to have bitterness that are terrifying, her fear mutating into insanity.
