The film follows four Mid-American Bible Company door-to-door salesmen: Paul "The Badger" Brennan, Charles "The Gipper" McDevitt, James "The Rabbit" Baker, and Raymond "The Bull" Martos. This hard-working quartet spends their days traveling across America, trying to sell gold-leaf Bibles to apathetic middle-class housewives and elderly couples.
