Seen-it-all New York detective Frank Keller is well intentioned - he hasn't come to terms with his wife leaving him for a colleague and may retire and he has been doing twenty five years on the force. Mixing up with an officer to investigate a string of murders linked by the lonely hearts columns he finds he associated with Helen, certainly one of the suspects and potentially is currently becoming.
