Many characters that are attached cross paths in this film, based on the stories of Raymond Carver. Waitress Doreen Piggot unintentionally runs into a boy with her vehicle. Immediately after walking the little one lapses into a coma. While at the clinic, the boy's grandfather tells his son, Howard, about his affairs. A baker starts harassing the household when they don't pick up the boy's birthday cake.
