Former pool hustler"Fast Eddie" Felson decides he wishes to come back to the game by choosing a pupil. He matches talented but green Vincent Lauria and proposes a partnership. Eddie educates Vincent scamming's tricks as they see pool halls, but he grows frustrated with the showboat antics of Vincent, resulting in a falling out and a quarrel. Eddie occupies playing and soon crosses paths.
