Surveillance expert Harry Caul is hired by a mysterious client's brusque aide to tail a couple. Assessing the set also his partner Stan and Caul figure out how to record a mysterious conversation between them. Tormented by memories of a previous case that ended Caul becomes obsessed with all the tape, attempting to learn whether the couple come in danger.
