S. A. Andrée, a 19th-century Swedish engineer, sets out to become the first man to reach the North Pole. His plan is to launch a polar expedition with two friends using a hydrogen balloon. In 1897, the balloon "The Eagle" takes off from Svalbard, but the three men are never seen or heard from again.
