Toshir Mifune portrays a young, idealistic physician who works at his father's (Takashi Shimura) clinic in a squalid neighborhood. During the war, when he slashes himself during an operation, he acquires syphilis from a patient's blood. He dismisses his heartbroken fiancée without explanation, while he secretly indulges in self-medication and is tormented by his guilt.
