He challenges Death when hammering Swedish knight Antonius Block returns home from the Crusades to discover his country in the grips of the Black Death. Block sets off meeting traveling players Jof and his wife, Mia, also becoming determined to evade Death long enough to perpetrate one redemptive action while he still lives.
