When Thomas and Alfred were born, a fire in the nursery forced caregivers to save the babies. Thomas imagines that he and Alfred were switched at birth, and that his misery should be Alfred's, from the loss of his sister to his inability to have a connection with Evelyne. So, as his life draws to a close, he devises a plan of vengeance against his lifelong foe.
