When a fissure reluctantly opens in a British mud flat throughout a military practice there, injuring one soldier and killing an American research scientist at a nearby nuclear plant joins with an British investigator to detect why the sufferers were radioactively burnt and , shortly afterwards, a run of radiation-related episodes are occurring within a ever-growing straight line away from the fissure.
